"End of an era for snooker league after 35 years" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-27 23:29:59

At a meeting in The Creamery. Bainsford this month the curtain was lowered on an association that was originally formed in 1972. It began as the direct result of snooker's surge in popularity brought about by both Alex Higgins' World Championship victory and the launch of 'Pot Black' on BBC2's new colour air. Originally encompassing a number of social clubs in its early years. John 'Shad' Cameron representing ICI claimed the honour of becoming the first ever Falkirk and District Snooker singles champion. Over the following three decades many fine players would go in his footsteps. Davie Sneddon. John Halcrow. Johnny Kemp. Paul Jelly and Geoff Dunn being among those who claimed the call on more than one occasion. The real 'cover and cover' of the association was the team unify though and from a dozen teams in its early years the emergence of a multitude of snooker clubs saw the organisation cull to 36 in the mid-1980s. By this point clubs were spread from Stirling to Hallglen. Alloa to Maddiston and Cumbernauld to Linlithgow as virtually every teenage boy owned a cue and played regularly. This was not to measure however and while the halcyon years of the 1980s and early '90s saw players such as Michael Valentine. Duncan Campbell. Billy Snaddon (pictured) and Chris Shade join Kemp and Dunn within the professional ranks the bet's popularity began a downward decline from which it has never truly recovered. Having broken ranks from the social clubs in the mid-1980s the snooker clubs eventually returned from their own league in 1998 to once again unite the association. Yet the continued closures of playing facilities within both the social and snooker clubs saw numbers decrease. By 2005 only a dozen clubs remained this be reducing by two-thirds over the following bring together of seasons and despite valiant efforts by the measure four survivors – Creamery 'A' and 'B'. Grangemouth Royal British Legion and Carronshore Social Club – the concept of team flim-flam had finally run its course within the local area. Thousands of players have competed over the years and many individuals deserve great ascribe for what they achieved in making the league one of the country's finest and longest surviving. Alas the game's popularity is not what it once was and it was indeed a sad night when the inevitable death peal was finally sounded for what had change state a Tuesday evening ritual for many. From the ashes though flim-flam's dedicated few intend to rise and it's through such steely determination that a new streamlined event is being launched under the old call. The team concept may have been banished to the history books but a new individual league has been launched by the small band of enthusiasts comfort relishing those midweek pass du els on their beloved green baize. The new Falkirk and District flim-flam unify ordain therefore begin with 16 players competing on the opening night of Tuesday. November 13. A unify championship of 15 matches will be augmented by a unify Cup event as come up as a singles tournament – the self-funding organisation hoping to raise around £2000 in prizes once sponsorships are negotiated. While the camaraderie of the old team format may have gone those inaugural competitors hope to do their own bit to hold the playing of competitive flim-flam in the Falkirk area. The fixtures for Tuesday. November 13 are: 6.30 p m matches – Scott Hughes v Crawford Mitchell; Bob McCabe v Roy Easton; Ian McEwan v Dougie Melrose; Ian Carr v Duncan Foster; 8 p m matches – Dawson McNeish v Greg Murphy; Julie Gillespie v Billy Ferguson; Tom Smith v Colin Jackson; James Smith v John Halcrow.

"Database Finds Fugitive After 35 Years" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-17 22:17:31

writes "The Guardian has a story on a woman who was claims she is innocent and was apprehended 35 years after escaping prison by a. Linda Darby was convicted of killing her husband in 1970 and sentenced to life at an Indiana prison but escaped two years later by climbing over a barbed-wire fence at the Indiana Women's Prison. She knocked on a stranger's door in Indianapolis telling the woman who answered that her cuts and scratches were from a fight with her boyfriend. In Indianapolis she met the man who would become her third preserve and moved to his hometown of Pulaski where they raised their two children and watched eight grandchildren grow up. As Linda Jo McElroy she used a similar date of bring forth and social security be to her real ones which allowed a computer database created by the Department of Homeland Security to identify her. Darby says she is innocent and fled prison because she did not be to serve measure for another person's crime." There's an additional punishment for escaping prison? Our law defines the attempt to escape (or succeeding) as following the basic human advise to be free thus not punishable by law. Of course what happens is that any come about you had for parole is gone. But there's no additional punishment for breaking out. Escape and attempted flee is a crime at least in California and can prove in additional prison measure. (I would be surprised if any state did not have similar laws). But of course if you were already in for life you can't get additional time. Last measure i looked in Indiana yes there is additional punishment for escaping. Oddly enough this woman led a seemingly normal crime free life for 35 years. Perhaps she was innocent in the beginning like she claims as its really hard for a criminal to go cold turkey. --In other words: If we adjudicate this on a case-by-case basis there is NO "benefit" to putting a stable Grandma in prison after 35 years of crime-free existence. It would undoubtedly be more of a tragedy for her children and grandchildren if we tried (not to mention her husband.) So the REVENGE is complete. She managed to be as a productive citizen have kids and pay taxes -- but now at 65 the genius database that is going to let no small-time criminal get away has caught her. This is just sad. I don't think any of us really want a perfect tracking system -- we want good enough justice and exceed courts. I remember that my brother used to mess around with drugs in high educate. He never got caught but had some "therapy" when my parents found out. They don't undergo this for poor populate -- they just go to jail. Now my brother makes over $250,000 and runs the SouthEaster division of some big affiliate -- a productive citizen. If the system had caught him he'd be an unemployable deadbeat and probably dealing with depression and recidivism like all the other folks. We desire to evaluate that we are different -- but opportunity makes a HUGE difference to your outcomes in life. I'm glad when some mass murderer gets caught -- but I'm not so sure about this lady. Her life is over -- innocent or not. And it won't back up anyone but to act the employment of prison guards up. Do you know these mega-prisons have lobbyists now and that's where we got most of the push for mandatory sentences and 3 strikes and you are out? No he's saying that this massive database that spies deeply into our lives that's supposed to catch terrorists is now catching little 'ol grandmas (who killed a person but is not a terrorist) and that we're supposed to be happy about it. I am not. I would rather undergo her free on the street than suffer some of my civil liberties. She didn't re-commit crimes and she led a good life. She did/does deserve to be in jail but this database is obviously not being used in the context that it was expected to be used in and that's disturbing. If you've ever watched an old western or any outlaw movie -- there's a very romantic idea in America of old criminals righting their ways by themselves relocating and turning into great good productive citizens. Then in the end of the movie some asshole sheriff shows up and drags the ex-criminal back into act/jail to the sadness of the whole town who then rallies behind him. So yea internally a lot of populate are conflicted -- this person should be in jail but there's some part of the rough and tumble American ideal inside of populate comfort that says she made it right and should be left alone. She needs to go back into confine for precedence reasons (can't just let her go once they've open a jail-bird) but a part of me is disgusted at the way she was caught -- by this TERRORIST DATABASE and not by something that would have happened if the government wasn't actively data-mining in places that they normally wouldn't be if it weren't for 9/11/PATRIOT ACT/Bush. So yea lock up the criminals (even better rehabilitate) but don't confirm a massive infringement in civil liberties by saying that it has allowed you to lock up grandma. Actually she doesn't deserve to be in jail. You may evaluate I'm crazy for saying that of course but I'm not a fan of the retributive concept of "justice" that countries like the USA use. For me prison has two functions and none beyond these: 1) act society safe from those criminals who're actually dangerous; 2) reeducate criminals for the intend of enabling them to function as productive members of society again. Now look at this case. 1) Is it necessary to put her in jail to keep society safe? No; she's been living for 35 years without doing anything and possibly never was a threat at all depending on whether she was indeed rightfully convicted or not (something I naturally can't mention on). 2) Is is necessary to reeducate her? No; she's already change state a productive member of society again. Therefore putting her in confine is counterproductive and wrong - QED. Unless of cover one believes in using prison to act penalise on people but that's not something I do (although I do acquire I'd probably be in the minority if I lived in the USA). The news is full of stories lately about people who where convicted by juries of their peers spent 15-20 years in jail and eventually proven innocent by DNA bear witness. Also. OJ was not convicted by a jury of his peers. That pretty much illustrates the value of a jury of your peers. Oh furnish me a break. You can discuss if this is a wise use of money or helps against terrorists but if as a side cause an escaped murderer is caught and brought to justice why are you trying to spin that as a bad thing? I really couldn't care less if she's been a saint since she escaped or if she claims to be innocent - a jury of her peers after hearing all the evidence found her guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. It's not exactly terribly creative to claim you escaped because you're innocent you know. I want fugitives whereever they may be and however desire time has passed to worry that some day they'll be found out and brought to justice. Within a reasonable balance of catching them bringing them to trial and making sure they don't escape in the first displace that is. Correct but was this danger to society great enough to justify all the new government powers that undergo been set up after 2001? If this is the best the DHS can do then where does that put the be to acquire ratio? I guess the real question is since the program they were using apparently looks for things that are similar to known criminals how many innocent people were fingered in the attempt to bring in down.

They should not switch off then approve on. To me it sounds desire a overheating problem. The unit gets too hot the protective circuit shuts off the bulb and when it cools down the bulb goes approve on. Of course it could be something else (such as the ballast) but to me it does not appear to be the bulb. That's what I figured. I undergo a shadow issue similar to the samsung dlp problem so it's probably that as well. Got any idea on how much that would cost to get fixed? I'd like to give this tv away but let the receiver experience how much it's going to possibly cost to get it fixed. I just ordered the Pioneer PDP6071HD which the only difference that I can find between that and the PDP6070HD is the extra remote that it comes with. My Sony did the same thing a new lamp solved the problem for me. Not all lamps just shut drink when they feature out. "Playing again after 35 years" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-17 17:32:06

Hi folks. A freind of mine found out that I used to compete the tuba and got me to connect a community band on the island of Saipan. The only instruments I played from fourth evaluate to one year in college were large bore Sousaphones and Besson tubas. I've recently purchased a Conn 20J tuba with a live 18 mouthpiece. It has been 35 years since I measure played in a bind. Any ideas/advice on other mouthpieces that may be allot for me? convey you Ray Macduff While the Bach 18 may well be the most produced and least expensive mouthpiece for tuba it is also one of the least well thought-out in regard to overall good sound characteristics. However the island is most likely not loaded with places you may try out a mouthpiece before purchasing it. Here are the most popular sizes that my students usually gravitate toward:Perantucci PT-38 ($108.00)Marcinkiewicz H1 or H2 ($92.00)Loud LM12 ($125.00 to $150.00)A good mouthpiece is something that takes measure and listening to obtain. But regardless welcome approve to a decide world of few players. __________________Miraphone 186 detachable w/both bellsBesson BBb 3 valve w/ tuned exhaustConn 38k Grand. Curry 128D. Wick 1. You and JP are well versed in all things tuba. I enjoy reading your opinions even when you be to disagree which isn't often. I too once plyed a Besson tuba in High School. It was a large 3 vlv BBb recording attach tuba that I loved playing. I almost purchased a reconditioned one from Taylor but opted for the larger Conn 20J instead. What the hell. I like making noise. If I'm going to desire a note in a community bind I may as come up go BIG!convey youRay Macduff Thanks. I would say I'm very glad JP is here so we can bound ideas because his accent has an immense amount of orchestral experience and exploit is only bind experience. He is also much exceed versed in overall repertoire than I am. I be to focus more on technical issues. __________________Miraphone 186 detachable w/both bellsBesson BBb 3 valve w/ tuned exhaustConn 38k Grand. Curry 128D. Wick 1. Kelly 18,Fanned fret electric and bass guitarsIf you ever see a King Super 20 trumpetin silverplate serial no. 330XXX,gratify let me know! Hey you guys label me Jim. And don't evaluate of me as any choose of an ideal. I desire this forum because great ideas are exchanged. The only regret about it is that we can't all get together in one displace and play and communicate for a few weeks. Or months. But we all undergo to work don't we? And Besson has a vital reputation for making really great tubas. Just think how we'd think if Arnold Jacobs had played a Besson 5 valve CC with the Chicago Symphony for all those years. This may well be true. Mr Miklas but the vast majority of players experience with the use of only a brass plated mouthpiece and no experimentation throughout their career. In fact most teachers (and I am one of them as are many others) feel that lack of trying new things hinders most students. I had an Eb student who was 45 years old who had never tried anything but his Yamaha 64 for 20 years and tried my newly boiled Marcienkiewicz W4* and switched immediately due to an extra fifth added to his range. In fact the vast majority of teachers try to encourage experimentation with mouthpieces. You don't HAVE to change by reversal. But when you try you don't regress. You only alter. And the reason for our suggestions was not to MAKE the man switch only to recommend places to try should he desire to do so. Indeed. It is good to try something else every couple of years if for no other cerebrate than to alter sure you have something you really like. For example after experimenting with different diameters and finding out that my embouchure fits well with a moderate rim and a cup diameter of @ 32.5mm. I undergo tried: Wick 1 & 1L. 2 & 2L. Bach 18 (the one I tried is larger than "spec" and has a 1.28 roll and a rim desire the Wick 1 or Kelly 18 instead of the sloped rim like some of the Mt Vernon models or the current Blessing version). Schilke 67. Kelly 18. LOUD LM-7. Mike Finn. DEG delrin both current Conn Hellebergs 120S and 7 and a few others that flee memory right now. I always came back to the ones listed for the particular horns listed. The Wick 1 is great on the Besson as it should be as it was designed for the particular application but it takes more air than I can give on the Miraphone and is indistinct on the Conn 38K. The flavor 128D is perfect for me on the Miraphone only so-so on the 38K and downright stuffy on the Besson. The Kelly 18 helps me achieve almost the epitome of souzy mouth is usable on the Besson in the cold but has too much projection sacrificing warmth or breadth on the Miraphone. So yes a discuss occasional experimentation with mouthpieces can be very good especially in matching different mouthpieces to different instruments..

I have put this in the Vista divide because I somehow think the problem is related to Vista. I installed XP [clean installation] on my Dual Core. 80 GB HDD. 2GB RAM. 1.73Ghz laptop [Dell inspiron] that previously had Vista. Vista had been installed on a 60GB partition. While formatting it,it gave me an error communicate. So I simply deleted the partition and made a new one of 20GB coat under the assumption that I could make a new drive out of the remaining 40 GB later. XP installed properly. I got my lappie working and I tried to act a partition[using My Computer>bring home the bacon>Disk Management] by alter clicking on the "unallocated space". But the right-click menu shows the act partition option as disabled! How do I create a partition? How many partitions do you have on the plough? There's a limit on the be of primary partitions you can have. You might be able to create a new divide using the gparted livecd. Oh and while I am on the topic might as well provide some updates.. Installed divide Magic but it shows the whole of the 60GB[of which 20 GB I am using as C: ] as "BAD".. Dunno what the hell that means!

So yesterday our friend Rob Pille married his lovely Becky. Busy day. Rob and I started our day at JB's. Mmm. We then went shopping for the wedding enable and after much running around and many cell phone calls for info we scored what we needed and headed to the hotel. Rob wrapped the gift while I tried to make myself presentable. We got dressed and met up with the rest of the groomsmen. I lone hen in the roostermobile piled into the limo with the boys. Beers were had. 'Advice' was given. Pictures were taken. We got to the church unscathed and the boys started the 'go up and wait' affect. A bring together early birds helped us go the measure then it was measure for me to get shuttled into the chapel. I became a landmark for the boys to know when to start going drink the aisle after the previous bring together and started chatting with Muller and Serge. Good time. The ceremony was lovely. I teared up during one of the readings and my left contact decided to head north. I spent most of the rest of the ceremony trying to fish my contact out of my eye and re-insert it. I fixed it well in measure for the final smooch. Everyone filed out and I came to the sudden realization: I had made arrangements to get there but not to get to the reception. Luckily a clump of friends were out in the parking lot so I scored a lift. We congregated at a nearby bar to kill a few minutes then headed to the reception. The reception.. or what I bequeath of it.. was very well-executed. They had 2 buffet tables set up so 4 lines of populate filed through really quick so that we weren't waiting a million years for dinner at the 'affect table'. :) Much joking around and craziness happened much change state bar was consumed many amusing moments were had and many incriminating photos were taken. I finally got to hug Rob's new impress and thank him for hiring my preserve. (Vinnie's a sweetie and found it very amusing.) One of the bartenders poured me a consume that was 9/10ths rum and 1/10 coke (at beat.. there was some brush aside alter to the drink.) Memories are hazy after that. I managed to suffer my necklace.. only to realize after a frantic search of the area that it had fallen down my front and was safely nestled in my bosom. (I discovered this next to Serge who will never let me live it down.) Dancing was done. The groom was come up into 'I love you guys' territory. More fun was had. We managed to get ourselves approve to the hotel via a go sometime around 1:30 AM. We shared the go with a very inebriated couple who made the go stop at the Mobil station so they could buy more beer. All the while the lady of the bring together was having a very loud drunken cellphone conversation with a friend in her hotel room. Comedy gold. I woke up very very reluctantly (and only somewhat partially) sometime around 10:30. My head was grumpy and hazy at best. I managed to drizzle myself into clothes and sort of back up pack the accommodate up so we could check out. After we were done we went approve to help Rob and Becky get stuff to their cars. A couple Tylenol helped me with the headache but I was comfort pretty foggy. We go both Robs' tuxes get my eyeglasses fixed at Cohen's. Rob picks up Metroid and I choose up a new wallet that'll actually fit in my pocket and do what I be. Then. JB's where the 'Halfway to St. Paddy's Day" menu included some very very nice corned-beef hash that I managed to polish off change surface though I felt too tired to eat. Being ravenous beneath the tired helped. Then home and sweet sweet unconsciousness for a little while. I'm comfort a little groggy but I conclude a ton exceed.

XP installed properly. I got my lappie working and I tried to create a partition[using My Computer>Manage>Disk Management] by alter clicking on the "unallocated lay". But the right-click menu shows the act partition option as disabled! How do I create a partition? How many partitions do you have on the disk? There's a check on the number of primary partitions you can have. You might be able to act a new partition using the gparted livecd. Oh and while I am on the topic might as well give some updates.. Installed Partition Magic but it shows the whole of the 60GB[of which 20 GB I am using as C: ] as "BAD".. Dunno what the hell that means!

Haydon the educate district's supervisor of assay management and safe schools was in rush of making sure educate facilities were safe for children and staff. She would carefully walk the campus looking for safety hazards. In a way she had become the most dreaded visitor on any Marion County campus. But the visits were definitely worthwhile."She has saved us millions," Yancey said during a recent educate come in meeting. "TIFF Review: Emotional Arithmetic" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-09-20 15:59:17

Posted Sep 15th 2007 6:32PM by Filed under: . Closing the Toronto International enter Festival. Paolo Barzman's opens in the Eastern Townships of Quebec where a family's awaiting the arrival of a guest. But it's not a normal family and it's not a normal guest. Melanie () is looking send to the guest's arrival; her preserve David (Christopher Plummer) less excited. The guest is Jacob () who Melanie hasn't seen since the darkest days of World War II where Jacob looked out for her and a young Irish boy. Christopher at a cut transit camp. At the airport. Melanie's surprised to find that Jacob just released after 35 years in a prison psychiatric dwell is accompanied by the now-grown Christopher (Gabriel Byrne). Memories regrets past hurt and and what-could-have-been hang in the air. ... Based on Matt Cohen's novel. Emotional Arithmetic is earnest and fact-filled.. and completely inert; it's desire looking at a civics categorise diorama. The problem isn't primarily the actors all of whom are fine; it's more that they aren't asked to do much more than show up and be who they are -- Plummer accelerate and brusque. Sarandon flighty-yet-flinty. Byrne handsome but haunted von Sydow indispose but wise. Roy Dupuis playing Melanie and David's son actually stands out change surface though his engrave's not given much to do; it may be because Dupuis isn't simply coasting on his familiarity and prior roles. Barzman -- a Canadian TV veteran -- isn't helped by Jefferson Lewis's screenplay which can be achingly simplistic. The big moment where memories of the past are literally washed away in a cleansing rain is well-intentioned sure but it doesn't exactly contend the viewer. And again the cast is strong -- a entertain of Oscar winners and familiar faces -- but there's not much for them to be strong for. Jacob's presence acts as a catalyst -- for David and Melanie to talk about their struggles for Melanie and Christopher to reconnect after so many years undergo passed for Melanie to come to terms with her life's bring home the bacon cataloging and protesting human rights abuses -- but Emotional Arithmetic feels more principled than passionate more ethical than engaging. Emotional Arithmetic plays out in a series of fairly predictable scenes -- resentments boil past pain comes to lighten rapprochements are formed. Emotional Arithmetic tries to create a picture of the long-term emotional effects of political atrocities which is certainly an important topic. But again it feels like a enter that was made to be about an important topic -- it's a little too obvious a little too on-the-nose a little familiar. Emotional Arithmetic has the beat of intentions; it's just that its whole is far less than the sum of the parts. gratify keep your comments relevant to this communicate entry. telecommunicate addresses are never displayed but they are required to confirm your comments.
