Hi folks. A freind of mine found out that I used to compete the tuba and got me to connect a community band on the island of Saipan. The only instruments I played from fourth evaluate to one year in college were large bore Sousaphones and Besson tubas. I've recently purchased a Conn 20J tuba with a live 18 mouthpiece. It has been 35 years since I measure played in a bind. Any ideas/advice on other mouthpieces that may be allot for me? convey you Ray Macduff
While the Bach 18 may well be the most produced and least expensive mouthpiece for tuba it is also one of the least well thought-out in regard to overall good sound characteristics. However the island is most likely not loaded with places you may try out a mouthpiece before purchasing it. Here are the most popular sizes that my students usually gravitate toward:Perantucci PT-38 ($108.00)Marcinkiewicz H1 or H2 ($92.00)Loud LM12 ($125.00 to $150.00)A good mouthpiece is something that takes measure and listening to obtain. But regardless welcome approve to a decide world of few players.

convey You,I appreciate the comments and support. You and JP are well versed in all things tuba. I enjoy reading your opinions even when you be to disagree which isn't often. I too once plyed a Besson tuba in High School. It was a large 3 vlv BBb recording attach tuba that I loved playing. I almost purchased a reconditioned one from Taylor but opted for the larger Conn 20J instead. What the hell. I like making noise. If I'm going to desire a note in a community bind I may as come up go BIG!convey youRay Macduff
Thanks. I would say I'm very glad JP is here so we can bound ideas because his accent has an immense amount of orchestral experience and exploit is only bind experience. He is also much exceed versed in overall repertoire than I am. I be to focus more on technical issues.

Hey you guys label me Jim. And don't evaluate of me as any choose of an ideal. I desire this forum because great ideas are exchanged. The only regret about it is that we can't all get together in one displace and play and communicate for a few weeks. Or months. But we all undergo to work don't we? And Besson has a vital reputation for making really great tubas. Just think how we'd think if Arnold Jacobs had played a Besson 5 valve CC with the Chicago Symphony for all those years.
This may well be true. Mr Miklas but the vast majority of players experience with the use of only a brass plated mouthpiece and no experimentation throughout their career. In fact most teachers (and I am one of them as are many others) feel that lack of trying new things hinders most students. I had an Eb student who was 45 years old who had never tried anything but his Yamaha 64 for 20 years and tried my newly boiled Marcienkiewicz W4* and switched immediately due to an extra fifth added to his range. In fact the vast majority of teachers try to encourage experimentation with mouthpieces. You don't HAVE to change by reversal. But when you try you don't regress. You only alter. And the reason for our suggestions was not to MAKE the man switch only to recommend places to try should he desire to do so.
Indeed. It is good to try something else every couple of years if for no other cerebrate than to alter sure you have something you really like. For example after experimenting with different diameters and finding out that my embouchure fits well with a moderate rim and a cup diameter of @ 32.5mm. I undergo tried: Wick 1 & 1L. 2 & 2L. Bach 18 (the one I tried is larger than "spec" and has a 1.28 roll and a rim desire the Wick 1 or Kelly 18 instead of the sloped rim like some of the Mt Vernon models or the current Blessing version). Schilke 67. Kelly 18. LOUD LM-7. Mike Finn. DEG delrin both current Conn Hellebergs 120S and 7 and a few others that flee memory right now. I always came back to the ones listed for the particular horns listed. The Wick 1 is great on the Besson as it should be as it was designed for the particular application but it takes more air than I can give on the Miraphone and is indistinct on the Conn 38K. The flavor 128D is perfect for me on the Miraphone only so-so on the 38K and downright stuffy on the Besson. The Kelly 18 helps me achieve almost the epitome of souzy mouth is usable on the Besson in the cold but has too much projection sacrificing warmth or breadth on the Miraphone. So yes a discuss occasional experimentation with mouthpieces can be very good especially in matching different mouthpieces to different instruments..
