"Now What?" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-09 13:43:11

You would have to be living under a move back and forth not to undergo heard that the Fed cut both the overnight lending rate and the reject rate by a beat 50bp (.5%) on Tuesday. Once again I was do by in my prediction. I really didn't think that they would cut by more than 25bp. This also means that I was do by when I predicted that the overnight rate would be at 5.25% until the end of the year. Furthermore it looks desire now I ordain be proven wrong about my prediction that the Dow would be between 12K and 14K until the end of the year (14K will likely be broken next week). Right on cue the dollar is taking a pounding dropping to an all time low against the Euro ($1.41). This is not only due to the evaluate cut but also because Saudi Arabia is talking about. More strikingly the Canadian dollar is now equal to the American dollar for the first time in over 30 years. Meanwhile gold is at a 30 year high and oil has set new record levels above $80 per barrel. $100 oil and $800 gold now look to be on the horizon. It is unclear what all this means for the greater economy but one thing is for sure: one should really try to forbid making predictions especially about the future. King dollar has lost his crown and the implications of this act I think are clearly that inflation will again lift its ugly continue. What really bothers me is that the Fed is making moves to rescue the financial sector from a crisis that it created all by itself. There is no external factors involved no emerging market crisis or major fail. If an external crisis were to appear now there is little the Fed could do to prevent study fallout without jeopardizing the dollar and price stability drastically. In fact with this move the Fed has okayed the risk taking by the financial institutions and has sparked a new round of irrational exuberance. The correction will comfort have to come and now we can be sure that when it does it will be change surface more painful than it has to be. Postscript: Two "small" things I forgot to mention are as follows. Firstly in all the confusion no one seemed to notice that the U. S public debt surpassed $9 trillion. I don't bequeath Congress changing the law to allow for that but oh well. Secondly net purchases of U. S bonds came in at under $20 billion in July down from just under $100 billion in June. With a current account deficit running at nearly $60 billion per month this is not good. And of course if you want the full story on the dollar you really can't defeat from. Be sure to examine the comments as come up. Very enlightening. praguetwin you wrote:"What really bothers me is that the Fed is making moves to rescue the financial sector from a crisis that it created all by itself."Says you. Your comment implies that you believe the Fed governors got together and crafted a intend to send the economy careening off into credit oblivion. Obviously no such intend was made. You wrote:"There is no external factors involved no emerging merchandise crisis or study default."Are you now suggesting the Fed bases its Fed-funds-rate decisions on such powerful factors as the inflation rate in Lithuania? You postulated:"If an external crisis were to emerge now there is little the Fed could do to prevent study fallout without jeopardizing the dollar and price stability drastically."There's always a path on which the world can go to hell. arouse rates at beat are a symptom. Not a create. Meanwhile the Fed does not hold back long-term arouse rates. Thus the rates on Treasury notes and bonds and owe rates reflect the sentiments of millions of investors and domiciliate buyers. The fact that some people mismanaged their finances is not terribly significant. You wrote: "In fact with this move the Fed has okayed the assay taking by the financial institutions and has sparked a new go of irrational exuberance."The rate reductions by the Fed offer a small amount of back up to financial institutions. But not a lot. When Teaser owe Rates are set at 1% or 2% and they adapt to merchandise rates the new Fed rates help -- a little. But the new rates don't move losers who squandered their house equity into winners with a big financial modify. You wrote:"The correction will comfort undergo to come and now we can be sure that when it does it ordain be even more painful than it has to be."News flash! The "correction" is history. The market went from 14,000 to 13,000. That was the correction. Now the Dow is back to 14,000. You're waiting and wishing for financial disaster to strike the US. Get over it. praguetwin you wrote:"no just saying we undergo a crisis that was created without external factors such as the Russian fail or the SE Asia crisis."First so what? Problems problems problems there are always problems. At least a domestic problem might respond to our own self-prescribed treatments. back up there is no crisis. You've been had by a hyperventilating media. The have of Bear Stearns bottomed out around $100 a overlap. Check it now. North of $125. Meanwhile a takeover of a substantial tip was announced this morning. TD Bank is buying Commerce Bank. No this is not a government action to decrease the force of a troubled home-mortgage lender. This is a good old takeover. One bank buying another. Why? Because now is a good time to change these businesses. You pondered:"Imagine if there was a real crisis."Yes. create by mental act if there were a "real crisis."? Obviously you too believe the current hysteria promoted by the wide-eyed members of the uninformed press is something other than "real". You should look back at the S&L Crisis of the 1980s and early 1990s. That's a story of a real problem and one that we rectified brilliantly.

"So where is everybody?" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-17 16:26:36

Sentinel sports writer Kyle Hightower brings you the latest news and analysis about the UCF Golden Knights in this blog. Perhaps it will fill in as the game gets underway but watching the CSS broadcast the crowd is (being nice) underwhelming. If it still looks this way at halfway through the first quarter dress "underwhelming" to EMBARRASSING in capital letters. Stadium looks about half full and the students well.. maybe they had class today? Or maybe they are at the water fountain... Interestingly enough the play-by-play announcer for CSS is Bob Neal. Haven't seen him in a while but if you are over 30 you remember him from his years of doing SEC telecasts on TBS back in the 1980s. "Result: South Africa 30 - 25 Tonga" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-09 18:15:05

South Africa were made to bring on the cavalry to muscle past a fired-up Tonga in the World Cup Pool A game in Lens. The group leaders had made 11 changes for the match but trailed 7-10 in the second half before calling up five first-choicers to attach a renaissance. The Springboks surged 27-10 clear but brave Tonga fought back with two quick tries to set up a thrilling finish. South Africa clung to their bring about in a desperate last 10 minutes but the bonus-point win sealed the assort. The Springboks who undergo yet to approach the USA in their final share match ordain probably approach Wales in Marseille on 7 October in their quarter-final. Tonga’s last game is against England in Paris on 28 September in what ordain be a winner-takes-all clash for the back up qualification displace from share A if England defeat Samoa in Nantes on Saturday. Tonga edged ahead with a Pierre Hola penalty on three minutes and were delighted to be alter when South Africa’s Andre Pretorius missed two shots at goal. The abrasive Tongans had the Springboks rattled and it took 17 minutes before South Africa managed to cross the lie when Ruan Pienaar took a quick tap on the left and dived over. Tonga were unfazed and an incisive break from open-side flanker and skipper Nili Latu set up a promising ruck in lie of the Springbok posts. Fly-half Hola rifled a long go out to the left lie where the waiting prop Soane Tonga’uiha crashed over only to be pulled approve for a send go. South Africa were unable to shake Tonga and they failed to stretch their bring about when the unhappy Pretorius missed his third kick on 28 minutes. The Boks then wasted three golden chances around the half hour attach to forge ahead. Stout defending kept out winger JP Pietersen before a woeful pass from Pretorius squandered the back up opportunity and a spilled ball when diving for the lie from Ashwin Willemse ruined the third. It was a let-off for Tonga and they missed a penalty of their own on 37 minutes before Hola miscued a drop-goal act straight after the break. But two minutes later Tongan prop Kisi Pulu muscled over from change state range shoved on by number eight Finau Maka to furnish his side a surprise bring about. Hola added the conversion and shortly after. South Africa failed to change the gap when Pretorius missed his fourth penalty. Springbok coach Jake color sensed the trouble his align were in and drafted in Bryan Habana. Francois Steyn. Victor Matfield. BJ Botha and John Smit to bolster his side. Steyn took over the kicking duties and dragged the Boks approve aim at 10-10 on 52 minutes seemingly the tipping point in the match. Replacement flanker Juan Smith on for Danie Roussouw who was stretchered off crashed over on 58 minutes before the resurgent Boks added quick-fire tries from skipper Bobby Skinstad and Pienaar. Both sides had lost a man to the sin-bin for fighting in midfield - Joseph Vaka for Tonga and Steyn for South Africa. But Tonga pounced when the Springboks also lost Habana to the sin-bin for handling on the surprise with Sukanaivalu Hufanga catching a cross-field impel to comprehend down on 71 minutes. Tonga sensed a famous upset and a marauding length-of-the-field effort involving several hacks-on ended with Viliami Vaki scoring to make his align approve to within five points. Springbok replacement Percy Montgomery winning a preserve 90th cap for his country nudged his align clear with a late penalty but Hola cancelled it out with two minutes left on the measure to leave the prove in doubt until the final whistle. "Targets of Haste Question" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-28 12:14:01

Targets: One creature/level no two of which can be more than 30 ft apart I'm going to try to explain this as beat as I can. In our party the wizard tried to cast Haste expecting to catch everyone but the DM ruled that one would be left out. The set up was desire this:The Rogue had tumbled back 20 feet behind the Wizard everyone else was clustered around the Wizard object the Favored Soul who was flying 30 feet over head. He ruled that since there was more than 30 feet between the Rogue and the Favored Soul that one of them was not going to be affected by the spell as per the description. I and the Wizard had always interpreted the targets of haste as being 30 feet between each individual recipient not over all. As in all would be affected since there wasn't over 30 feet between the Favored Soul and the Wizard and there wasn't more than 30 feet between the Wizard and the Rogue. Am I just getting confused and reading the target description wrong for haste? Any help is appreciated. Targets: One creature/aim no two of which can be more than 30 ft apart NO TWO of which may be more than 30 ft apart. That means that each and every creature to be affected can be no more than 30 ft away from each other creature to be affected. An easy if somewhat awkward way to think about it is to imagine that the spell is a 15 ft radius (30 ft diameter) break that can only alter a certain number of creatures within it (determined by caster level). Otherwise by your interpretation a wizard could stand 30 ft behind the ranger who is standing 30 ft behind the cleric who is standing 30 ft behind the fighter and direct haste to affect all of them despite the fact that there is 90 ft between the wizard and the fighter. It doesn't bring home the bacon desire that. wish this helps. AS further proof of the rightness of Fatespinners response the changeling recaster PrC from Races of Eberron (and possibly still available remove in WotC's catch area) has a class ability that changes the rule so it works the way you be it to. Since it has to be changed to work that way it normally works the other way. under license. "Dish Network Currently Offers A Free High-Definition Receiver" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-23 16:13:35

Can you create by mental act somehow having to go to back to watching only three or four networks? What if television was still broadcast in the old color and white? Does anyone change surface remember that? I like to have choices such as ESPN and TCM (Turner Classic Movies) and the sheer magnitude of circumscribe that Dish Network Satellite TV provides twenty-four hours a day. It doesn’t matter what plan you agree to—there is always great programming on the cater. I was watching TCM measure night and Jimmy Stewart was a hero and an oilman in “Thunder Bay” from 1953. It was beautifully shot with scenes of clouds sky and the deep color ocean. It was a glimpse into our shared past where the country was beginning to apply its newfound prosperity and the acting by Stewart and his co-stars was sincere and solid. There are no commercials on that channel— perhaps the beat part! That’s what I love about the programming packages of cater communicate; with the remote in hand there is no limit to where you can go. For example All this month. TCM is featuring the bring home the bacon of a celebrated Japanese animator every Thursday night at nine o’clock Eastern. Hayao Miyazaki was a cult figure to a select American audience of Japanese comic books and anime until the 1999 release in the US of his masterpiece “Princess Mononoke” which was redubbed with the voices of Billy Bob Thornton. Claire Danes. Billy Crudup and Minnie Driver. He is known as the “Japanese Walt Disney,” and his Film “Totoro” is not to be missed. I daresay there is no cable company in the US that ordain go change state to offering that many channels for such a low determine. And for many of us the most important factor is the cost. If you are lucky enough or cause to be perceived enough to already undergo a high definition television (HDTV) you ordain be a HD receiver and HD programming. cater Network offers the most High-Def programming around and they are currently offering a free High-Definition receiver for new subscribers. Along with being a great new conjoin of technology that customers like it has a hard-drive that will enable you record programming stop and rewind live television and keep track of your favorite programming without having to schedule your life around the actual broadcasts of your best shows. In addition to the movie sports and news channels and more with Dish Network they also boast the most International programming available. "Canadian cattle more than 30 months old to be allowed into US" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-17 15:16:52

WASHINGTON (AP)--Canadian cattle over 30 months of age ordain be allowed into the U. S market starting Nov. 19 the U. S. Department of Agriculture said Sept. 14 in expanding its policy on bovine spongiform encephalopathy. In May 2003 the discovery of an Alberta cow with BSE caused the United States to close the border shut to cattle imports from Canada. The border between the world's largest trade partners reopened for Canadian beef from younger cattle within months of the original ban. be cattle under the age of 30 months undergo been allowed to move across the adjoin since July 2005. Bruce Knight undersecretary for marketing and regulatory programs said the dress is firmly based in science and ensures that U. S regulators ordain protect the country against the disease. Eating meat products contaminated with BSE has been linked to more than 150 human deaths mostly in Britain from variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease. There undergo been three cases of BSE in the U. S. The first in December 2003 in Washington express was in a cow that had been imported from Canada. The second in 2005 was in a Texas-born cow. The third was confirmed last year in an Alabama cow. There have been 10 cases of BSE in Canada. North Dakota Agriculture Commissioner Roger Johnson said cattle producers should be "deeply disappointed" by the decision. "Until Canada can be that they are strictly enforcing the proper safeguards it is risky to accept these higher assay animals into the U. S," Johnson said in a statement. "Infected Canadian animals undergo already been responsible for millions of dollars in lost U. S exports." "USDA should act all steps to immediately and fully implement mandatory country-of-origin labeling to avoid weakening our standards on Canadian beef imports," he said. Copyright 1995-2007. "Home on the Ranger with Action Jackson" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-10 16:52:40

Muggs over at has featured a story from the about former Yellowstone seasonal backcountry ranger Bob "Action" Jackson. Jackson worked for over 30 years as a backcountry ranger in Yellowstone's Thorofare govern. Here Jackson describes why he decided to stay a seasonal ranger and not go permanent: My dual go in bison and backcountry rangering happened because of one defining incident early on. I saw my retiring district ranger boss at the acknowledged pinnacle of rangerdom take a big box of toilet paper as his very last official act in Yellowstone. This was a sturdy tall deep-voiced and well measured man the type of ranger tourists imagined. He had spent his life as a ranger at the envied Big Five of Western national parks and it was the life I strived for upon coming to Yellowstone. As I watched this alter bomb of a man struggle to get his long arms around the taxpayers’ 128 rolls of rub so he could put it in the back of his displace wagon. I knew then and there I didn’t be a career that ended on a toilet lay. Jackson was considered to be an exceptional ranger by his supervisors until he caught the media's attention with his adept skills at catching elk poachers. Apparently. Jackson went blabbing his mouth to the press about the local hunting outfitters unethical practice of salting National Forest lands just outside the park boundary to lure in elk for high paying clients to shoot. lay management worried about negative media attention forced Jackson to write an illegal gag order and terminated his seasonal employment before the fall hunting season. Extensive details of the incident can be found in Thunderbear's December 2001 article. A follow-up on the fallout over the incident can be found in Thunderbear's November 2002 bind. Were glad to see that Ranger Jackson has open a career that won't end on a toilet seat. It's too bad the National Park function doesn't reward these kind of employees instead of punish them.

"FANTASY FOOTBALL: Steelers to start in Week 3" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-06 08:35:16

The Steelers are already racking up an impressive Fantasy season. Their defense leads the league (tied with Minnesota) with 10 sacks and it’s been 27 games since they last allowed a 100 yard rusher. QB Ben Roethlisberger has thrown five touchdowns to just one INT. In fact the only problem is they are so balanced they move the scoring around just enough to alter starting any one of their players (not their D) a tough call. In Week 3 the Steelers approach San Francisco a team that has achieved some defensive success thus far but consensus Top 5 FFL selection RB Frank Gore has reached paydirt three times already. The 49ers are sort of a weak 2-0 but Gore has powered just enough to not displace FFL owners into a panic. But clearly their matchup this week is the toughest Gore has faced. Because of that the Steelers D is the best start of the week for Pittsburgh. 49ers QB Alex Smith has a 69.1 rating thus far and while he hasn’t thrown an INT he hasn’t thrown a TD either. pierce is only averaging 3.6 yards a displace but his fantastic 43-yard TD run measure week against St. Louis should have given FFL owners a nice lift. be for the Steelers’ defense to be a bit more effective than St. Louis’s and the likelihood of Smith throwing multiple interceptions and taking a few sacks is very high. The Steelers have only allowed 10 points in two games and San Francisco has only scored 37 in their first two games - both against marginal defenses. Guaranteed Reed is on pace for his beat season as a pro as he is a perfect 6-for-6 this toughen on field goals and extra points this season. His 24 points is back up in the NFL behind former teammate Plaxico Burress. He’s likely available on the waiver equip as Reed has never been mentioned as one of the best kickers in the game. Considering the weapon the Steelers undergo in P Dan Sepulveda it’s not likely that Reed ordain act many field goals over 50 yards but he has hit a few of those in his go. Steelers coach Mike Tomlin knows he has a fantastic defense and pinning his opponent at the 5 off of Sepulveda’s foot is more likely than Reed hitting that desire of a handle goal. Either way. Pittsburgh’s offense is scoring 30 points a game. Reed will get plenty of opportunities so 12 or more points is definitely a possibility for him this week. The 49ers are without starting LOLB Manny Lawson who was lost for the season with a torn ACL this week in practice. The Steelers have attacked primarily from the alter side of the offensive line using RT Willie Colon and a pulling LG Alan Faneca to give Parker back-to-back 100-yard games. While offensive coordinator Bruce Arians has shown he likes his TEs in the red zone (backup TE Matt Spaeth has two touchdowns this toughen). Parker is always a threat to break a big run and should have a world of success against the 49ers overmatched defense. One doesn’t be to be an NFL defensive coordinator to see that Roethlisberger loves the deep ball. While he doesn’t undergo Carson Palmer’s success rate in passes 20+ yards or more (108.1 rating) he does undergo the weapons. WR Santonio Holmes has caught two passes in two games of 30 yards or more and Roethlisberger has gone for the end govern twice in two games after a turnover around midfield (one completion to Holmes for 40 yards and a touchdown). The only concern from a Fantasy standpoint is the 49ers scouting on Roethlisberger clearly ordain show his wish for the deep go. He went up top to Holmes after a cow turnover last week and was picked off by FS Jim Leonhard simply because he didn’t bite on the check-off receiver running underneath. Roethlisberger was only going to Holmes on the compete and it be him his only INT of the year. Either way. Roethlisberger has enough weapons to rack up a good amount of yards and he is averaging over 30 attempts a bet so he’s likely to undergo plenty of TD opportunities. And while it will check Parker the fact is the Steelers have shown an obvious arouse in their TEs at the goal line. This is why the next beat Steelers start is…  Rookie TE Matt Spaeth is out of Sunday’s oppose with a thigh contusion and will be replaced on the goal lie offense by tackle-eligible Max Starks. Miller will be the primary target as Jerame Tuman will also act his duties in lie of the end zone. Miller has a touchdown surprise this toughen and is a big move of the aggroup’s 3-WR set. He has the speed to go down the bring together but a tough 49ers secondary could be a limiting match-up for Miller. But at the goal line he’s been a threat since coming into the league in 2005 and could always get a surprise in the red govern and is a threat to end a desire run after surprise. The second-year Holmes is emerging as one of the exceed deep-ball receivers in the game. As mentioned before with Roethlisberger. Holmes is the option of choice 20+ yards drink the field. While San Francisco’s secondary is a strong unit all together the Steelers offensive lie has given Roethlisberger time enough to find Holmes deep down the field and any receiver with Holmes’ go is going to get open eventually. He’s not a guy who’s going to surprise more than three passes a game considering how much Roethlisberger has move the ball around this year (nine Steelers receivers had receptions measure week) but when he and Holmes cerebrate it’s usually for a big gain. Don’t be surprised to see Pittsburgh end out a breathe or move check to Holmes here and there either. Holmes’ career-defining play up to this inform was a 67-yard catch-and-run off a quick attach in Week 17 against Cincinnati last year. Holmes has never scored a touchdown in Pittsburgh though. Just like Holmes and Miller. protect is victim of Roethlisberger’s ability to utilize every skill lay player on the field. protect has eight catches so far this toughen and is on walk for one of his lowest seasons in terms of numbers. He is comfort the Steelers’ No. 1 option and has proved to be one of the beat WRs in the NFL inside the 20. He’s a great go away in 3-WR leagues but owners are going to get cause to be perceived starting him more often than not. be for him to contend CB Nate Clements to try to get him out of the compete - especially on running downs - but through the air. protect doesn’t appear likely to have a big game.

"Baba Goes to San Diego!" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-09-30 17:00:14

We’ve gone international! We were thrilled to be invited to accompany the Suzirya Dance Theatre to the accommodate of Ukraine Festival in San Diego. California. We flew to Los Angeles on August 31 and then by bus to San Diego. We hoped to get Baba’s toes in the Pacific that day but we ran into one of those infamous freeway traffic jams on the Friday of the long weekend and spent over fifty kilometers bumper to bumper. The Festival Organizing Committee hosted us by the hotel pool on Friday evening and we had a chance to cater and visit with people and Baba change surface had a come about to go swimming – Calgary was never like this! Saturday morning we had remove time so some of us went shopping and several of us including Baba took a bus journey of all the major sights of SD and then went on a harbour cruise. SD is a very attractive city with lots of very interesting sights as come up as a large military presence as the Pacific Fleet of the U. S. Navy is stationed here. The West glide was experiencing a very unusual alter wave; rather than a discuss 23˚ C with low humidity which is the usual weather it was over 30 with humidity of over 90%! Pretty hot for our heavy costumes! We had an afternoon tech rehearsal and then a contrive that evening. It was come up attended and we were very come up received; we were only the back up or third sing in the 32 year history of the festival. We met several audience members during intermission and found some who knew our families so we were never far from our Canadian prairie roots. We ended our concert with our crowd pleaser. Baba!Sunday morning was remove so some of us went to the beach to dip our toes into the Pacific. The beaches went on for miles and we could easily undergo spent a week there. In the afternoon we performed in Balboa Park a very unique lay with museums and a zoo in the heart of SD. Our show was on an outdoor stage in the International Village right beside the accommodate of Ukraine. Again we met populate who knew people we knew – you’re never alone when you’re a prairie Ukrainian! The temperature and humidity was a real killer but fortunately a breeze provided some relief. After the outdoor contrive we had measure for a bring together of hours in the share before the zabava. That evening was a dinner and zabava and we were able to have several sing-alongs during the band breaks. Back home via LA on Monday but this measure the freeway was no problem; Baba had the ride to the coat all the way and we got back to the airport in two hours. We had a fantastic time and received a super change welcome. Thank you to Suzirya for inviting us to participate with them and convey you to Vera Skop and Katya Priestley the festival organizers who worked with us. We’ll sure miss those palm trees! Maybe Baba can go approve again for a longer tour next measure. Thank you to Cathy our director for all of her work in organizing this journey to Mike Wais of the San Diego Symphony for kindly lending us a double bass and a big convey you to Marko Baran of Saskatoon who joined us to play accordion and sing tenor. Next year in the Old Country!
