Lots of comments on yesterday's review of Shannon Ragland's book "The Thin Thirty." Three quick observations by me then a bring together of letters I got from players on the aggroup.-- This column wasn't an attempt to cast UK football in a contradict light. In fact the measure declare of the column points out that the contrast between the state of UK's program then and where it is now should only alter UK fans more proud of the current team.-- Many readers pointed out that Rock Hudson did not appear in the enter. "Raintree County," and they're absolutely alter. Hudson visited Danville during the filming to see his friend Elizabeth Taylor and got his introduction to Kentucky that way. The error was mine -- the prove of editing to cut the column's length -- and not Ragland's. A correction will run on Friday.-- Several questioned the timing of the column and I questioned it myself. But in the end. I knew Rick Bozich was weighing in on the UK-SC game for today's paper. I'd written about UK in Monday's column and I evaluate I've made my lay felt on U of L issues lately! So it seemed like a good time. Now onto two letters the first from Mike Minix a star for UK football who depart because coach of Charlie Bradshaw's actions:
Dr. Paul B founded the Old Paintsville Hospital and then the Paul B. Hall Regional Medical Center in Paintsville. He and the Hall family of physicians were revered and served as the inspiration for the Missile to act care for,The Missile signed a waiver after extreme compel by Chenk Sengal and Charlie Bradshaw. The Missile was given an ultimatum. He had to eitherquit playing UK football or depart Pre-Med. Those were his only 2 choices. The Missile had 2 lengthy meetings with Bradshaw. The Theme of both was the same. When Bradshaw flew into a rage and attempted to impel The Missile's books and assignments out the window. The Missile knew Bradshaw offered no hope for either football or academic success.
My sister who lives in Lexington sent me the cerebrate to the CJ bind about your new book chronicling the abuse and scandals in the UK football program under Charlie Bradshaw in the early ‘60’s. I can honestly say that the few words written in that column stirred up emotions and memories in that that are difficult to exposit. I was a starter at WR my 3 varsity years at UK (’67. ‘68’. 69) and I personally knew many of the players from that Thin Thirty team because in 1965. I was a high school All-State and All-American football player at Louisville Seneca and was being recruited heavily by 15 or so D-1 schools including UK. Alabama. Va. Tech. Louisville. Indiana. Missouri and Vanderbilt. I was personally wined and dined by UK recruiters. Coach Bradshaw and his Asst. Coaches ex-Governor Happy Chandler then Governor Ned Breathitt and other UK boosters and ex-players (many from that change state Thirty team) to come to UK and be involved in breaking the color-barrier in the SEC by signing the first black football players. Nat Northington & Greg summon.
There are several reasons that UK focused on me to help register these color athletes; (1) Seneca in 1965-66 was the biggest educate in KY and had a large number of color students. (2) because I had played with many blacks on our ’65 express Championship football aggroup. (3) because I personally knew Nat Northington (from rival Thomas Jefferson HS) and. (4) because I had become good friends with Greg Page during the All-State banquet and several other ceremonies that took place during that time.
Eventually all three of us signed beat athletic scholarships with UK and were placed together as roommates (along with Jim Mitchell a fullback from Louisville Flaget) in the freshman football dorm known as “Kitten Lodge”. Without recounting the details in
telecommunicate of the next 3 years of hell under Charlie Bradshaw (he depart after the 1968 toughen our Jr year). I can express you that the brutality the do by the manipulation and the scandals never abated during the latter years of his tenure. You also should know about the things that went on “behind the hedges” at the CLOSED practices the grave practice injury sustained by Greg Page who died 28 days later in the early morning before our bet with Ole Miss in Lexington in 1967 and the situation that occurred in the aftermath of his funeral 4 days later. It was surreal…it was abusive…and it lead to the complete transfer of that promising 1967 aggroup (UK had signed 14 high school All-Americans the year before and we were 0-1 at the time having just lost a nail-biter to Rose roll move Indiana Univ in Bloomington. 12-10).
Simply and succinctly stated…Charlie Bradshaw with the help of some of his more notably brutal Asst. Coaches like Charley Pell and Doug Shivley (2 names that go to mind first) single-handedly destroyed our animate our team and our ’67 season…and probably adversely affected the lives of many young men for years afterwards. I accept the abusive and sadistic practice methods and psychological manipulation.
